Interesting post! I had no idea Monk and Trane covered Abide with me although I'm sure sharing a surname with the composer may have had something to do with it :)
Jacques Louissier is perhaps another jazz artist worthy of mentioning. Although I don't rate his music as highly as the guys in your list, he has done some creative arrangements, including pieces by Bach and Debussy

I'm definitely interested in some more Kingwell, if you've got any particular recommendations... And I hear you on the simultaneous book-reading. I've toned down a bit in recent years, but still seem to have 2-4 books going at any time.

Excellent! I always appreciate your reviews. The observation about the asides that hint at entire essays is spot on. It’s why I might read every Kingwell book, even though many of the topics don’t particularly interest me. I expect by now that he will surprise me many times over, and he’ll do so with such biting prose.

You actually finished before I did. (I got sidetracked with some other books, plus I’m weird in that I sometimes have 10+ books going at the same time.)

I dog-eared many of the exact same quotes. Well done again, sir.

A few reactions:

1. That sounds amazing. I think I got a little runner’s high just from reading about it.

2. This is almost certainly a well-duh remark, but I think I just realized that ultramarathons are testing something other than the endurance of your leg muscles.

3. The world needs more Philosophical Observations.

4. Please post more often.

[...] 2. Listen to This. Alex Ross is one of my favorite writers. This book is mostly a collection of stuff he’s written for The New Yorker. The essays I dog-eared most heavily were Chacona, Lamento, Walking Blues, Infernal Machines, The Storm of Style, Song of the Earth, Verdi’s Grip, and his writings on tour with Radiohead and Bob Dylan were interesting, too. He’s also got a great audio guide for Listen to This like the one for The Rest is Noise (which is awesome). [...]
